The MLTT season may be on summer break, but don’t thinkour players are taking time off.
Right now, some of the biggest names in Major LeagueTable Tennis are competing at one of the sport’s premier international events:the United States Smash 2026, running June 26 through July 5 at the OntarioConvention Center in Southern California. We’re right in the middle of ittoday, and the MLTT names in the draw are worth following closely.
If you’ve never watched a WTT Smash event before, here’s the context: this is one of only four Grand Smash events on theinternational table tennis calendar, the equivalent of a Grand Slam in tennis. It draws virtually every top-ranked player in the world, with 2,000 rankingpoints on the line for singles champions. The field in Ontario right nowincludes World No. 1 Wang Chuqin, No. 2 Tomokazu Harimoto, reigning worldchampion Sun Yingsha, and Olympic medalist Hugo Calderano. When our MLTTplayers compete here, they are testing themselves against the very best thesport has to offer.
The tournament is now in the Round of 32 in singles andthe Round of 16 in doubles, with action at the Ontario Convention Centerrunning through this evening.
Today is a big day for MLTT fans. Bay Area Blastersstar Lily Zhang faces Ying Han in the Women’s Singles Round of 32, one of themore anticipated American matchups of the week. Zhang, ranked World No. 41,earned direct entry into the main draw through her world ranking and has achance to make a deep run. She and Sally Moyland are also teamed up in Women’sDoubles, where they face the formidable Japanese pair of Miwa Harimoto and HinaHayata in the Round of 16 tonight.
Florida Crocs star Omar Assar, ranked World No. 34,takes on Japan’s Sora Matsushima, seeded sixth in the tournament, in the Men’sSingles Round of 32 this afternoon. A win there would be a significant resultand a strong statement heading into Season 4.
One standout moment already from the early days:Florida Crocs’ Jishan Liang, teaming with Sally Moyland in mixed doubles, upsetSingapore’s world No. 15 mixed doubles pair Koen Pang and Jian Zeng in fivegames on opening main draw day. That kind of win on this stage matters.
The breadth of MLTT talent represented at the US Smashis one of the clearest signs yet of how far the league has come.
The Los Angeles Spinners are especially wellrepresented with An Jaehyun (World No. 22), Lubomír Pištej of Slovakia, andAditya Sareen of Australia. The defending MLTT Champion Portland Paddlers havetwo of America’s brightest young stars in Sid Naresh and Nikhil Kumar, who bothcompeted through qualifying to reach the main draw. The Chicago Wind featureDaniel Tran and Canadian Olympian Mo Zhang, while Texas Smash brings formerU.S. National Champion Amy Wang and Nandan Naresh. The Carolina Gold Rush are representedby Canadian veterans Eugene Wang and Edward Ly.
Atlanta Blazers star Quadri Aruna, World No. 70, roundsout a field of Season 4 MLTT competitors that spans multiple continents andmore than a dozen countries.
Princeton Revolution minority owners Lin Yun-Ju ofChinese Taipei (World No. 7) and Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany (World No. 23)are also in the field, a reminder of the deep international connections theleague has built.
One of the things that makes MLTT different from mostdomestic sports leagues is that our players don’t disappear in the offseason. Many spend the break competing around the globe at events exactly like thisone, testing themselves against the best in the world before returning torepresent their MLTT clubs.
The experience they gain here is real. When Assar stepsacross the table from a top-10 player in Ontario, he’s building match sharpnessand competitive edge that he’ll bring directly into the Blazers’ Atlantaopener. When Lily Zhang fights through a Round of 32 match against aworld-class opponent, that’s preparation that shows up in close Golden Gamemoments in October.
We have already seen MLTT players face one another onthe WTT circuit this summer. Earlier this month, Atlanta Blazers star QuadriAruna defeated Princeton Revolution player Kang Dongsoo during WTT ContenderZagreb, giving MLTT fans a small preview of the competitive fire Season 4 willdeliver.
As the tournament progresses through the week towardthe July 5 finals, keep an eye on the MLTT names in the draw. The competitionthey face in Ontario today could very well become the difference-maker in aGolden Game this fall.
I’ll be watching closely, and I hope you will too.
