When Major League Table Tennis fans watch the Atlanta Blazers this season, they won’t just be watching one of Africa’s greatest table tennis players. They’ll be watching one of the sport’s true international pioneers.

Here’s the short version for newcomers: imagine an underdog who walked into the Olympics as a longshot and beat one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen. That’s Quadri Aruna, and he’s now wearing Atlanta colors.

Atlanta’s newest superstar arrives in MLTT with one of the most accomplished careers ever seen from an African athlete in table tennis. A multiple-time Olympian, African Champion, and former World Top 10 player, Aruna brings world-class experience, explosive shot-making, and international star power to the Blazers lineup.

Aruna made history in May 2022 when he became the first African player ever to break into the ITTF Top 10 world rankings. His rise represented a major moment not only for Nigerian table tennis, but for the entire African continent.

Long before reaching the Top 10, Aruna captured the attention of the table tennis world during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Entering the tournament as the No. 27 seed, Aruna stunned fans worldwide with one of the greatest Olympic runs ever by an African table tennis player. He defeated Chinese Taipei star Chuang Chih-Yuan before upsetting German legend Timo Boll, an Olympic gold medalist, to become the first African player ever to reach the Olympic quarterfinals in men’s singles.

His fearless forehand attacks, athletic movement, and creative style made him one of the breakout stars of the Olympics. Even in defeat against eventual gold medalist Ma Long, Aruna earned worldwide respect for his shot-making and fighting spirit.

Now at age 37, Aruna remains highly active on the international circuit, continuing to compete against many of the world’s top players throughout the 2026 season. He’s faced elite names including Felix Lebrun, Liang Jingkun, and Tomokazu Harimoto, and recently picked up a straight-games win over fellow MLTT player Kang Dongsoo of the Princeton Revolution in qualifying rounds overseas.

That kind of result is a small preview of what MLTT fans will see throughout Season 4. Players aren’t just preparing for domestic competition during the offseason, many are actively competing on the global circuit against world-class opposition before returning to the United States for MLTT action. When Aruna steps on the table for Atlanta, he’s bringing that level of competition with him.

For the Atlanta Blazers, Aruna’s arrival represents more than simply adding another talented player to the roster. His leadership, experience, and confidence under pressure could quickly transform Atlanta into one of the league’s most dangerous teams.

It also fits a larger story for this Blazers team. With players from Africa, Japan, Korea, China, and the United States all wearing the same jersey, Atlanta is a snapshot of what makes MLTT different: some of the best players in the world, from all over the world, competing for your hometown team. The Blazers are looking to take a major step forward in Season 4, and with Quadri Aruna leading the charge, Atlanta now has one of the most recognizable and respected stars in world table tennis wearing its colors.
